STORYLINE:
Rival protesters faced-off in the Israeli town of Hader late Wednesday as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended Mimouna celebrations, an event marked by Moroccan Jews a day after Jewish Passover.

The two blocs chanted and traded insults as mounted police separated them.

Eli Malka, a government supporter that attended the protest, said they wanted their reform support to be heard.

"We came to express our position with love and joy," Malka said.

Anti-government protester Bani Hatzir said the protest was "for democracy."

"The most basic thing we want is three authorities and not one less," Hatzir added.

Mimouna is a festive rite established among Jews of Moroccan origin, in which they mark the end of Passover with food they abstained from during the week-long holiday, such as leavened food.

Tensions have been high among Israelis protesting a planned judicial overhaul by Netanyahu's right-wing government.

Netanyahu put his contentious judicial overhaul plan on hold for the Jewish holidays but has vowed to pass the package through parliament “one way or another.”

He has come up against a wall of opposition he has never before faced in a three-decade political career.

For three months, hundreds of thousands of people have repeatedly taken to the streets week after week to demonstrate against the plan, crippling major highways and city streets as they accused him of pushing the country toward dictatorship.
