Some sex offenders to get early release from prison under government plans warn whistleblowers

"Our prisons are on the point of collapse," the new Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood declared in July, blaming the last government for the dire crisis. Her urgent response was a plan to release thousands of prisoners early, with one caveat: those with convictions for sexual offences and serious violence would not be among them.

But with the scheme due to start next week, Channel 4 News has learned that some sex offenders will in fact be eligible for release - if they have a second or consecutive sentence for a lesser offence that qualifies them to walk free early.
