Israel rushes to contain severe outbreak of bird flu that has killed thousands of migratory cranes

A severe outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu virus has killed thousands of wild migratory cranes in northern Israel, and prompted widespread culls of infected poultry at farms in the area. In what was described as “the most serious damage to wildlife in the history of the country”, Israeli officials said more than 5,000 migratory cranes were found dead in a nature reserve in the Hula Valley.
