U.S. President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will hold a joint media availability on Friday in Ottawa and are poised to announce a deal to return asylum seekers who cross the U.S.-Canada border via unofficial crossings such as Roxham Road, marking a major development at a time of record irregular crossings into Canada.
According to a Canadian government source cited by The Canadian Press, officials were negotiating a deal that could designate all 8,900 kilometres of the shared border as an official crossing under the Safe Third Country Agreement, closing a loophole that has allowed migrants to pass through Roxham Road.
In addition, Canada will open 15,000 slots for migrants from the Western Hemisphere to apply to enter the country legally as part of the agreement, a U.S. official said. A Canadian government official said these would be resettled refugees.
