King Stannis loses everything because he trusted the advice and suggestion given to him by Melisandre. He sacrificed his family just so he could "rule" over a kingdom but this is really his own ego. He wants to be king and have dominion because his ego is convincing him he must which is a lie. This is similar to the passage in the Bible where Satan tempts Jesus to bow down and worship him and Jesus will be "king over all the nations." Jesus represented the archetype moralist, just like Jon Snow.
