This video is an AI experiment of automatic restoration, upscaling
and colorization of one of the oldest surviving videos of India
captured on film.
The video is labeled ‘Panorama of Calcutta, India, From the River
Ganges.’ from 1899 (or earlier). It was captured by the Warwick
Trading Company. Photography by John Benett-Stanford.
Although released under the title ‘Panorama of Calcutta’, the film
actually represents Varanasi (Banaras). The title actually represents the collection of short films, some of which were shot
in Calcutta (Kolkata) but those films have unfortunately been lost.
This video footage has been automatically upscaled to 50 fps,
8K and digitally colorized using Artificial Intelligence.
If you would like to see more of such AI film experiments, please leave a comment below. Please note that the colorization is done using AI based on a huge training dataset, there is no "ground truth" data available from the era.
