If you have a toothache, backache, or any other type of pain, your first impulse may be to reach for a pill.

Many people rely on medications, but they come with the risk of side effects, drug interactions, and habitual use or addiction.

You may find the relief you need from a variety of natural painkillers instead.

Many herbs and spices can treat inflammation and other related conditions. These plant-based options fall under a category of treatment known as alternative medicine, which also includes acupuncture, yoga, Reiki, and other practices. When it comes to pain relief, you may be surprised by what might help you feel better.

One of the effective natural remedies against osteoarthritis, for example, is rosehip. Powder made from rosehip is more effective at reducing osteoarthritis pain than Tylenol, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of California.

Researchers reviewed the results of three prior studies on a total of 287 patients and found that after an average of three months, powdered rosehip was nearly three times more effective at reducing osteoarthritis pain than paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen and marketed as Tylenol, Panadol, Anacin-3, Tempra and Datril. Combinations of paracetamol with other drugs are also sold under a variety of brand names.

Rosehip can help treat infections and increase immunity because it's among the best sources of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. The use of rosehip as a natural remedy dates back to ancient times. For example, the Native American tribe Ohlone used this fruit to make compresses to treat wounds and scabies. Put four tablespoons of chopped rose hips in a little boiling water to infuse for 10 minutes. Then soak a piece of cotton in the infusion and apply directly on the affected skin area.
