Migrant crossings look to have hit a new record high with more than 800 men, women and children reaching the UK across the Channel on Monday.

Smugglers took advantage of the September heatwave and calm sea to send a flotilla of dinghies and other small boats towards England's shores.

The previous record of 828 migrants landing on UK shores in a single day was reached on August 21. It's believed that the final figures from Monday will surpass that.

More than 13,500 migrants have reached the UK from France so far this year, compared with 8,417 for the whole of last year.
