Israeli police forces on Monday raided a residential complex in central Jerusalem where dozens of women and minors were allegedly being held by a man in slave-like conditions.
Authorities suspect the man, thought to be in his 60s, was abusing and sexually exploiting the women for years.
An investigation was first opened several years ago when police received reports of a closed community operating as a seminar for women and children, a pretext for what now authorities believe was a sex cult. Â
Mounting evidence gathered over the past two months led the police to believe that some 50 women who lived in the complex had been isolated from society and their family, and children were held in a closed-off area.
Authorities are now investigating whether the male suspect was abusing the children, aged five to 11, some of whom were taken for questioning by a child protection specialist.Â
"The suspect also punished the women in different ways and stole money from them," police said.
Eight women accused of aiding the rabbi were also detained and are being held on suspicion of slavery. Police units and border police raided the area in coordination with the Israeli Center for Victims of Cults.
