The moment a Gaza ceasefire amendment failed to pass in the House of Commons

Jess Phillips was among the eight shadow ministers to defy Sir Keir Starmer to vote for an amendment calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Labour leader expressed his “regret” as Paula Barker, Rachel Hopkins, Afzal Khan, Sarah Owen, Yasmin Qureshi, Naz Shah and Andy Slaughter supported an SNP amendment that laid bare frontbench divisions.

Labour has previously indicated that any frontbenchers who defied its stance on a ceasefire would be sacked. A number have already resigned.

In a resignation letter, posted on Twitter, Ms Phillips said: “It is with a heavy heart that I will be leaving my post in the Shadow Home Office team.

“On this occasion I must vote with my constituents, my head and my heart which has felt as if it were breaking over the last four weeks with the horror of the situation in Israel and Palestine”.

Two parliamentary private secretaries, Mary Kelly Foy and Dan Carden, were among the 56 Labour MPs who trooped through aye lobby with the SNP.

Shadow education minister Helen Hayes, who said she “must call for a ceasefire” when she stood up in the Commons, is recorded as not having voted.
