Until the Covid-19 lockdown, London’s Saatchi Gallery was hosting a hit exhibition, Tutankhamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh. The artefacts on loan from Egypt attracted large crowds despite high ticket prices - it was said to be Britain’s most expensive art exhibition ever. But an investigation by Egyptian journalist Gehad Abbas and BBC Arabic has found that the deal done by the Egyptian government to lend the artefacts to a commercial events company may have breached laws designed to protect priceless ancient treasures.
