Brownells Gun Techs Steve Ostrem and Caleb Savant tell us about one of the oldest and most popular firearm types of all - the shotgun. If you're new to guns and shooting, their advice might help you decide if a shotgun is right choice for your first gun. Shotguns are wonderfully versatile: they can be used for hunting birds or deer, clay-busting competition (trap and skeet shooting), military / police operations, AND for home defense. It's much easier for the average person to hit a target with a shotgun than it is with a handgun, making a shotgun an excellent home-defense gun. Ammunition is readily available in a wide variety of different types of shells. Almost ANY shotshell will work for self-defense. Shotgun ammo also seems to remain obtainable even during those temporary ammo panic buying periods we've seen recently. There' s TON of available accessories for popular shotgun models, too, so you can make your shotgun easier to shoot. Best of all, the price of a sturdy, reliable, basic pump action shotgun is very reasonable - even better if you buy a used one.
