Who was King Gustav Vasa, and why is he an important character in Swedish History?

In this two-part series, we’re going to cover the life and legacy of Gustav Vasa. We will start by examining the final days of the Kalmar Union, and the rise of king Christian II of Denmark. Then we will cover Gustav Vasa's rebellion against the Danes and the creation of an independent Swedish kingdom.

Afterward, we’re going to learn about his 37-year long reign, and how he during his kingship transformed Sweden from a late-medieval semi-feudal kingdom into the modern state which in the early seventeenth century would become the Swedish Empire.
