The Armenian Genocide (AKA; The Armenian Holocaust) refers to the Turkish government's systematic extermination of 1.5 million Armenians residing within the Ottoman Empire 🇹🇷
The starting date for this atrocity is reported to be on or around the 24th of April 1915, as it was on that day that Ottoman/Turkish authorities rounded up, arrested and deported 235 to 270 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders from Constantinople (currently known as Istanbul). The majority of these individuals were starved and eventually murdered.
The Turks carried out this genocide in two phases:
1. The wholesale killing of the able-bodied male Armenian population through massacre and subjection of army conscripts to forced labor camps.
2. The deportation of women, children, the elderly and the infirm via death marches that ended in the Syrian Desert. Driven forward by members of the Turkish military and police, the Armenian deportees were deprived of food and water and were victimized via robbery, torture, gang-rape and murder âœðŸ‡¦ðŸ‡²ðŸ’€
