Hardline religious group Matay Irgunay Hamigdash, or Headquarters of the Temple Organizations, has a mission — to rebuild a Jewish house of worship on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. Currently home to the Al-Aqsa mosque, Islam’s third holiest site, the location has been long contested between the two religions. The Jewish group however maintains that this location is key for fulfilling biblical prophecies.
“It is a new start of the redemption and we hope that next year or even before that we will be on the temple mount,” Temple of Zion Chairman Hillel Weiss says. He adds, “What we want to do is the law will come from here that all 70 nations will have a seat in the court and the law will be the law of the bible.”
On a rainy day before Passover, the organization gathers on a rooftop in the Old City to carry out a controversial practice: ritual sacrifice. Under high security, the sheep is brought to a secluded area. Religious followers continue to make final preparations.
“We are at another milestone of the process of the Jewish people returning to their homeland a milestone in process of the redemption of the world were standing right in front of Zion, the temple mount, where god choose to rest his divine presence,” says participant Yahuda Glick.
“Unfortunately, presently, for political reasons we can’t do it where we are meant to do it, so we are here expressing to God here we are we are ready,” Glick adds.
Far from of the eyes of the public, the sheep is slaughtered. Its blood is brought out for ritual use. With the coveted Temple Mount in the background, the worshippers hope to hold their next ceremony in a new location.
“We are sure that next year or maybe even this year, four days later, all the groups of Israel will come with their lambs to the yards of the temple and will build a kosher alter; you can see it, and in one hour we can bring it inside and start all the rituals of Passover lambs,” explains Weiss.
To complete the sacrifice, the lamb is skinned and displayed for the group. Its body is cooked, to be eaten later that night.
