It was with this guillotine that three young students were executed, not during the French Revolution in the late 18 th century, but on Feb. 22, 1943. A death sentence that came after Adolf Hitler called for the widespread re-use of the infamous execution device against his perceived enemies.

SERIOUSLY!!! THE NY TIMES? Are you seeking and trying to support special victim status because the alleged victims (may be) Jehovah's witnesses? If there was a guillotine in Dachau, why didn't Eisenhower mention it or the Germans trotted through to see the other lies (shrunken heads, skin lampshades, jew soap, ad nauseum!) The communists were sent to Dachau for re-education and then released. Passing out flyers would have been the same type of offense that required the same type of 'reeducation' NOT execution. (INCONSISTENCY in REPORTING).

While the ancien regime tolerated even those who were determined to abolish it, and men such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Montesquieu were feted in the royal salons, the French revolutionaries stamped out dissent with the guillotine. Suspected opponents of the revolutionary regime were simply put to death.

The guillotine used to execute Nazi resistance siblings Sophie and Hans Scholl in 1943 appears to have been found in southern Germany after being thought lost for decades, a museum said Friday.

Under the Nazi dictatorship, the transportable guillotine was used in hundreds of executions from 1940-45 in several cities, but after the war its whereabouts became the source of mystery and rumour. Long believed to have been thrown into the Danube River, it was never found during searches but probably was taken from the city of Straubing to Regensburg where it was handed over in 1974 to the National Museum. The Scholls, known in German as the Geschwister Scholl, have been recognised as symbols of Germany's resistance movement against Hitler's regime, with a literary prize named after them as well as memorials and many streets and schools.
