The Holodomor (Ukrainian: Голодомор, "Extermination by hunger" or "Hunger-extermination"; derived from морити голодом, "to kill by starvation") was a man-made famine in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic between 1932 and 1933. During the famine, millions of Ukrainians died of starvation in an operation ordered by Josef Stalin and directed by Lazar Kaganovich to subdue the people of the Ukraine and break their resistance to Bolshevik rule and to destroy their culture and religious values, practices, institutions and ethnic identity.
