Published on May 16, 2021
Submarines in the Pacific during WWII were charged primarily with seeking out and destroying Japanese warships and shipping. However, their stealth also made them valuable for special missions. U.S. submarines played a key role in the defense of the Philippines, delivering supplies and agents to support the guerillas, and also evacuating civilians and military or political leaders targeted by the Japanese. These secret missions helped to lay the foundations for the creation of the Navy SEALs.
