Sudanese Imam Muhammad Al-Amin Ismail condemned a sixth-grade history textbook in a Friday sermon on January 1, 2021, which was posted on his YouTube channel. The book featured The Creation of Adam from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel fresco on several pages of the book. Imam Ismail said that the director of the National Centre for Curricula and Educational Research, Dr. Omar El Garai, who had showcased the book in a press conference, “defends heresy and atheism.†Al-Amin Ismail then waved the book in his hand and started repeatedly, shouting "Allah! Allah!" He then burst into tears and started weeping and wailing along with his congregants. Imam Ismail then declared: “Let’s close the schools†and said that the pictures show the Lord "hugging a naked woman." The textbook sparked controversy in Sudan, and Dr. El Garai was ultimately fired. In 2011, Muhammad Al-Amin Ismail drew international attention when he accused Shiites of distributing toy guns with anti-Sunni messages (see MEMRITV clip No. 3175).
