Around 1900, Russia constructed the Chinese Eastern Railroad (CER) in Manchuria as a shortcut for the Trans-Siberian Railroad. After the Russo-Japanese War of 1905, Russia and later the Soviet Union continued to own and operate the northern part of the railroad. However, in 1929, China decided to seize control of the CER by force, sparking a war between China and the Soviet Union.
