Ashkenazim Jews and hereditary defects

There are very few populations that have a very definite origin and founding. Fewer yet can be traced to a very specific founding and have a well known line of descendants. Ashkenazim Jews are one of these very rare exceptions.
All of this is interesting but not very useful if the information has little to no value or use. The use we have for this information is that such a distinct ancestry explains the pathologies we see over represented in the Ashkenazim Jewish people.
Unlike the royal families of Europe there are roughly 10 million Ashkenazim Jews. The population is so large that the diseases are not just common. It is so large that historically they were well known to be prone to more than 10 diseases.
The diseases were known to be tied into the Ashkenazim Jews but not why. This was in the early days of genetics research. It was still clearly understood that it had something to do with families.
This started a real interest in race, ethnicity and other imutable characteristics that effect your probability of developing different diseases.
Despite events in the 20th century this interest carried on. This is why we know that Ashkenazim Jews have a range of genetic mutations that contribute to their probability of developing different diseases. Modern technology has only made this easier.
Our knowledge of genetics and heritability explains what is happening. The Ashkenazim Jews have a wide prevalence of certain genes. This prevalence increased because the Ashkenazim Jews married in an insular way which mean adverse genes became more common.
This led to more children carrying these adverse genes. Some children had 2 copies of these genes. This led to either carriers or suffers if different diseases.
This common situation leads to modern genetic counseling. A service in which the possible problems and ways to avoid them can be discussed with parents to be.
