Israel launched air strikes against the Palestinian militant Islamic Jihad in Gaza on May 9, 2023. The health ministry of the Hamas-controlled territory said that at least nine people were killed, including several children. This came almost a week after Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza exchanged fire following the death of a prominent Palestinian hunger striker in an Israeli prison.
