1845 Eureka Rebellion
The rebellion of the goldminers at Ballarat due to the petty tyranny of the government was an important chapter in AU's history. Their demands for the end of tyranny on the goldfields and for a parliament representative were met, marking the start of a new era in the development of democracy.

Ned Kelly
A Hero revered by many who was forced into becoming an outlaw by the police who framed him and intended to shoot him without a trail. The common knowledge of the police harassment directed against him and his family, and his subsequent evasion of police capture for years, turned him into a global folk hero. His comments regarding the flood of asians into his country show his appreciation of the dangers of the Asianisation of Australia. He was hung in 1880.

1891 Great Shearers' Strikes
The Strike, during the overseas induced depression of the 1890s, was in response to the pastoralists reaction of falling wool prices and a real threat to reduce shearers' wages. During the unrest, the government ordered the arrest of the shearers' leaders on charges of sedition and conspiracy. The eventual failure of the strike broke worker militancy and hastened the call for a political movement to represent the interests of working people. This strike is part of AU heritage, and rightly deserves to be celebrated today as part of AUs unique culture.

1915 Gallipoli/Waltzing Matilda
This was the first time AU troops fought together as one. It was here that Australians gained a new sense of nationhood; whereby any lingering considerations of separate state identities were swept away, replaced by one united people: the Australians. The courage, determination and sacrifice of the Anzacs is commemorated as a significant part of AU's culture and identity.
