Germany’s Defense Minister has warned that in an increasingly dangerous world, the German military must become combat-ready, and quickly. That will require a major overhaul not only to the Bundeswehr– but also to attitudes in German society. Despite billions of euros promised last year to modernize the armed forces, decades of deliberate underinvestment mean it is still facing shortages in equipment, funding, and men who are willing to fight. This all amid concern that soon Germany might not be able to count on the United States for its defense. The topic: European security: Is Germany fit for combat?
