Australian Lawyers Alliance spokesperson Greg Barns says there are “big concerns” among lawyers in relation to war crimes committed by both Hamas and Israel.
2,000 lawyers in Australia and the UK are calling for an immediate ceasefire as the only way to uphold international law in Gaza and the West Bank.
The letter urges the federal government to help fulfil Australia’s international legal obligations in relation to the escalating conflict.
“There are big concerns about the conduct of certainly Hamas committing war crimes, and crimes against humanity, but also Israel,” Mr Barns told Sky News Australia.
“As a matter of international law, it is important that there be a proportionate response.
“We were urging the Australian government to of course subscribe to these international law principles, to ensure that there would be a ceasefire at the earliest available opportunity.”
