Israeli police officers used tear gas to disperse protesters gathered in East Jerusalem on Friday to protest against the eviction of a Palestinian family from Sheikh Jarrah in the coming weeks.

Family members and supporters who rallied in solidarity with the family participated in a small-scale march, holding signs and Palestinian flags.

The eviction order handed to the Salem family has been delayed and will likely be reissued in January 2022.

The Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood has become a strong point of contention as Israeli and Palestinian locals have contested the ownership of properties in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood.

SOT, Activist: "I am a Jerusalemite, I am a Jewish-Israeli born and raised in Jerusalem and I am against the horrible policy of Israel that evicts Palestinians from their homes, the homes they were born in, the land that belongs to them. It basically steals the all the rights and tries to expel them."

SOT, Ibrahim Salem, Resident (Arabic) : "As for us, we will not leave our homes. We, as sanctuaries, are targeted here in Jerusalem, as the sanctuaries and the people of Sheikh Jarrah or the people of Wadi al-Joz. We are all in this area and they want to displace us, but we will not leave our homes, our land, or the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood for all, even if It happened."

SOT, Fatma Salem, Resident (Arabic): "With the will of God, come, we will strengthen them, and we will not leave our land and we will not allow anyone to enter and live with us. He will not live with us. He will kill us. These settlers do not fear God and do not take anyone’s account. The government is with them, the police are with them, and the army is also, what will we do!"

SOT, Ibrahim Salem, Resident (Arabic) : "They gave us the decision to vacate the house on 12/29, and we are 70 years living in this house, from my grandparents to my mother and me, generation after generation, our dreams, our childhood and our lives in this house, they made a decision to claim ownership of the land, not just this land, they claim ownership of all the area It's them."
