In 1971 Jimmy Page purchased The Boleskine House, a manor on the south-east side of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is notable for having been the home of author and occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), whose writings and ephemera he had already begun to collect. Page encountered Crowley’s work during his teenage years after chancing upon a copy of Crowley’s monograph, “Magick”. Crowley was already regaining popularity as a counter-culture icon with his inclusion on The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover, and other musicians and artists were now lifting his legacy from its previous obscurity. Led Zeppelin’s third album, Led Zeppelin III, released in October of 1970, shortly before Page’s Boleskine acquisition, would include the iconic Crowley phrase “Do what thou wilt” inscribed on the inner ring of the record. (https://www.boleskinehouse.org/jimmy-page/) In the 1969 release of the 1st album (I): - Song #1 (Good Times Bad Times | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yxa0-LTuTU&t=130s); "Faust, now I'll hell'm for you".Plant sings backwards Faust is the protagonist of a classic German legend based on the historical Johann Georg Faust. The erudite Faust is highly successful yet dissatisfied with his life, which leads him to make a pact with the Devil at a crossroads, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faust - Song #8 (I Can't Quit You Baby | 0:08 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2uQ349nM8I); Plant makes reference to the 1966 urban legend "Paul is dead" which gained popularity in 1969 and sings backwards: "Oh! Paul is dead! Oh God stay for a while for you on the road! Help me out there no one beside you No! I survive in the nerve they want me" In the 1969 release of the 2nd album (II): - Song #5 (Heartbreaker | 0:23 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HEaOFPE8OE); Plant alludes to the Boleskine house prior to the acquisition and sings backwards: "Heist it all, have it all I survive the world I see It's a mum with me I will live in a house soon ... We make it, of course we make it Here you will get it on the water" The 1970 release of album III, which was recorded in part at Headley Grange in Hampshire, is a mile stone in terms of back masked content: - Song #6 (Gallows Pole | 3:00 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpGDTqHM5sw) contains the phrase "Ropes are all I contribute Going FAZI" - Song #8 (That’s the Way | 1:42 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJcVxdAkOwo) contains the phrase "It's an order here with FAZI He seeked out with Man made goodwill". The only explanation I have been able to conclude from searching about this name FAZI, is that it is privy to Led Zeppelin and possibly the name of an entity similar to Aiwass. It's also possible many of the lyrics were dictated to Led Zeppelin by FAZI in the same manner that AIWASS dictated to Crowley. However taking a wild guess, I think it's a portmanteau of FAUST and NAZI. On the 4th album, released in 1971 and also recorded in part at Headley Grange: - Song #4 (Stairway to Heaven | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAXLvD62OPo); Everyone knows this one don't they? "There's no escaping it!" - Song #5 (Misty Mountain Hop | 2:10 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjdU37e3ivU); contains the words "In my frenzy I ask for the lyric". - Song #7 (Going To California | 2:47 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z2wVVnEEqA); contains the words "Hey Arise in the power of the room beam" These likely refer to the fact the band burned old banisters to create heat. The house was damp and cold and it's likely true the heat was needed however it's also likely true the fire was used as a source of energy for the rituals that were likely conducted. (Led Zeppelin IV | Full Documentary | 9:15 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2ccaDGJleY) In the 1973 release of the 5th album (Houses of the Holy): - Song #5 (Dancing Days | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOupjGyiqJk); Plant makes another reference to The Boleskine House acquisition and Crowley's "Book of the Law" and sings backwards: 2:38 "Oh it starts and then feeds at that They deserve, Jimmy owns the place Oh bring them rare, we feed you Hand over laws and we make it with you" 3:10 "Would you open the law book Hear why I'm not gonna write about the number On the trip he found us Pray for me God's here, forsake us" - Song #7 (No Quarter | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xCfHXtVjUQ&t=290s); "Lord, the Wall, brought this new [German] Don't go for it, hands more, he walk with one. Here I'll battle wood for soil" It was the summer of 1974 and Jimmy Page had finally realized his passion project of opening a bookshop dedicated to occult books in London. The Equinox bookshop at 4 Holland Street, a short walk from Page’s London home, had recently opened its doors next to a burger restaurant. Visitors could purchase items such as “Liber B vel Magi” by Aleister Crowley that were affixed with the bookshop’s logo. (https://ledzepnews.com/2024/02/21/the-history-of-jimmy-pages-equinox-occult-bookshop/) Thelema is a Western esoteric and occult social or spiritual philosophy, as well as a new religious movement that was founded in the early 1900s by Aleister Crowley. Central to Thelema is the idea of discovering and following one's True Will, a unique purpose and calling that goes beyond ordinary desires. Crowley's system begins with The Book of the Law, a text he said was dictated to him by an entity named Aiwass. This foundational work lays out key principles, including the central axiom "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law". This principle emphasizes personal freedom and the pursuit of one's true path, while being guided by love and finding one's authentic purpose. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thelema) It's also well documented that Led Zeppelin’s isolation at Headley Grange resulted in a couple of paranormal sightings and that “Jimmy thought he’d seen a ghost there too”. (https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/headley-grange-led-zeppelin-musical-refuge/) Within Crowley's "Magick In Theory And Practice" the following exert details some of the requirements and methods used to obtain higher orders within the religion. The term "Adeptus Exemptus" means, the "Exempt Adept". In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a title given to people who have reached the 7° of the Order. "First Method." Let the Exempt Adept first train himself to think backwards by external means, as set forth here following. --- (a) Let him learn to write backwards, with either hand. (b) Let him learn to walk backwards. (c) Let him constantly watch, if convenient, cinematograph films, and listen to phonograph records, reversed, and let him so accustom himself to these that they appear natural and appreciable as a whole. (d) Let him practise speaking backwards: thus for "I am He" let him say, "Eh ma I". (e) Let him learn to read backwards. In this it is difficult to avoid cheating one's self, as an expert reader sees a sentence at a glance. Let his disciple read aloud to him backwards, slowly at first, then more quickly. (f) Of his own ingenium, let him devise other methods. There are still many disbelievers that can't accept the fact that Led Zeppelin back-masked any material at all. Well know broadcasters such as Alan Cross; claim all you are hearing is “reverse phonetics” where the brain tries to make sense of gibberish by looking for patterns. Stating, “With the right about of suggestion, you can hear almost anything”. Sadly this argument does nothing to support or refute anything that Led Zeppelin did. It is merely a fact that this phenomenon exists in human beings. However to draw a causal link to Led Zeppelin's work is completely irrelevant if not outright professing gibberish himself. (https://www.ajournalofmusicalthings.com/running-stairway-heaven-backwards-satan/) There are also scholars with PhD's that state the impossibility of creating backward lyrics, stating it's virtually humanly impossible. Sadly these arguments also do nothing to support or refute anything that Led Zeppelin did. What these people fail to appreciate is the incredulous minds of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. The technology was available using reel-to-reel which could be slowed down and played backwards. They also had use of 8 track tape which looped indefinitely and you could 'Hear this Hear words backward Relax Play laps in your car'. Plant sings this backwards on III, Song #9 (Bron-Y-Aur Stomp | 3:28 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4BP2ipI4R4). Both were perfect mediums for re-looping at that time. Completely do-able if you are brilliant. I don't understand what's not to believe? So many people accept how incredible they were forward; it's absurd to discredit their capabilities backwards! What Led Zeppelin created was both art and science. What I've done here is science and I've endeavored to do justice to their accomplishment, for the love of Rock and Led Zeppelin. Someday I hope to complete all albums, albeit, it likely won't happen any time soon. I've satisfied myself though, it's true, they did it! They will never admit it though, for legal and religious reasons and because they are bound by the strictest vows not to do so. Plant relates this backwards on the first album in Song #9 (How Many More Times | 3:25 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDrfDVr_dvc), "I'm for this to have rules, for the red carpet". “The sin which is unpardonable is knowingly and willfully to reject truth, to fear knowledge lest that knowledge pander not to thy prejudices.” ― Aleister Crowley, Magick: Liber ABA: Book 4
