The ancient Greek philosopher Plato described human society as being divided into three social classes which he referred to as the bronze, silver and gold or the workers, soldiers and philosophers. All ancient civilisations recognised some version of this stratification. Ancient societies were never egalitarian and nor did they strive to be.
