Speaking at the United Nations (UN) on Sunday, Israel's UN ambassador Gilad Erdan said the attacks on Israelis in Gaza over the weekend were “war crimes” and “Israel’s 9/11,” ahead of a UN Security Council meeting scheduled later in the day.

"As the Security Council prepares to meet today, Israel has one sole demand: Hamas' war crimes must be unequivocally condemned. This unimaginable atrocity must be condemned. Israel must be given steadfast support to defend ourselves, to defend the free world,” Erdan said.

Meanwhile, UN Palestinian Permanent Observer Mr. Riyad Mansour said that “If this is about peace, then the way to it is not through further entrenching oppression and occupation, but by ending it. You cannot say nothing justifies killing Israelis and then provide justification for killing Palestinians. We are not subhuman.”

The attack by Hamas launched at dawn on Saturday represented the biggest and deadliest incursion into Israel since Egypt and Syria launched a sudden assault in the Yom Kippur War 50 years ago.
