The leader of Yemen’s Houthi rebels threatened on Wednesday to target American warships operating in the region, a day after the US announced the establishment of a new international coalition to protect commercial vessels sailing through the Red Sea.
In an hour-long speech, Abdel Malek al-Houthi warned that his forces will target American battleships with drones and missiles if US forces target Yemen.
"If the Americans have a tendency to escalate further and involve themselves more, or to commit foolishness by targeting our country or waging war against our country, we will not stand idly by," he said.
"We will target them and make American battleships, American interests, and American shipping traffic a target for our missiles, drones, and military operations," he added.
For weeks, Yemen's rebels have been attacking ships transiting the Red Sea with drones and ballistic missiles.
