The German Michel is a national personification of the Germans that presumably originated as early as the Renaissance and is now used almost exclusively in caricature.
In the 'VormÃ¤rz', i.e. in the period before the attempted revolution of 1848, the 'German Michel' finally became a political and national figure who increasingly stood for "the people". In the 1840s, great hopes were pinned on the "German Michel," who until then had generally been a bit dimwitted and indolent, who had chased Napoleon out of the country in 1813 but had subsequently allowed himself to be robbed of the fruits of his efforts. An example of this is the "Michelsode" by Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1843, in which the author directly refers to the mocking figure "Cousin Michel" and reinterprets it as the virtuous and brave - which is reminiscent of the diametrically opposed interpretations of the name in the 16th and 17th centuries.
