Chinese leader Xi Jinping began an unprecedented third term as the countryâ€™s president after a unanimous vote of endorsement by 2,952 members of the National Peopleâ€™s Congress (NPC) on March 10, 2023. Xi was also reappointed head of the national Central Military Commission, which oversees the Peopleâ€™s Liberation Army. The vote was more of a political gesture showing the Chinese political eliteâ€™s unequivocal loyalty and deference to Xi, who is Chinaâ€™s most powerful leader in decades.
