In the Spring of 1991 I was invited by the Jewish Museum in New York City to have my students create a video exploring the history of Black/Jewish relations to go along with their upcoming exhibit "Bridges and Boundaries: African Americans and American Jews. Just before the our students at Educational Video Center were about to begin their video project, violence broke out in the primarily Black and Hasidic neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Tensions and anger rose after 7 year old Gavin Cato, the son of Guyanese immigrants, was killed by the car driven by a Hasidic man, and 29 year old Yankel Rosenbaum was was stabbed and killed.
A critical and fraught moment in New York City history provided my students with the challenge and opportunity to deeply examine issues of racism, anti-semitism, inequitable city services, history, coalition building, and community reconciliation.
